Finding the right safe can sometimes be a challenge. A good understanding of burglary protection levels is the first step to making the right decision.
Safes in Europe must be certified to the EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 standards. These well-defined standards are tested at selected test centres across Europe.
EN 1143-1 certification
Based on the tested resistance values for full access and partial access, safes are classified into security grades as follows.
The difference between full access and partial access to the valuables in the safe is the time it takes to break in. Partial access means the valuables can be reached with one hand through the walls of the safe.
EN 14450 certification
The requirements for EN 14450 are lower than for resistance grade 0 in EN 1143-1. Free-standing security safes must pass an anchoring test.
The tests on safes include:
- Attack for partial and full access
- Anchoring test
- Additional tests with core drills, explosives and gas
According to ESSA, the insurable amounts vary between the different European countries.
