EU standards for burglary protection of safes
The European standards for burglary resistance are ratings issued by independent, recognised test institutes across Europe. The burglary-resistance classification can be decisive for the insurance category of the valuables stored. Intensive tests are carried out to determine how long a safe can withstand break-in attempts.
Burglary standard EN 14450
This standard applies to security cabinets intended primarily for private use.
GRADE S1: Lowest certification class – suitable for private use where the risk is limited.
GRADE S2: Stronger than S1 – often required by insurance companies for home use
According to the EN 14450 standard, security cabinets must be anchored to either the floor or the wall to achieve approved security. Combined anchoring to both floor and wall is also permitted.
Burglary standard EN 1143-1
This standard applies to highly insulated safes, cash boxes and ATMs. Burglary resistance is assessed on the basis of which tools are used and how long it takes to achieve partial or full access to the contents.
The most common resistance grades are:
GRADE 0: Burglary resistance up to approx. 30 minutes
GRADE 1: Burglary resistance 30–50 minutes
GRADE 2: Burglary resistance 50–80 minutes
GRADE 3: Burglary resistance 80–120 minutes
GRADE 4: Burglary resistance 120–180 minutes
GRADE 5: Burglary resistance 180–270 minutes
