Safe Locks: Which lock should I choose - Key or Code Lock?

Safes · Buying guides· Reviewed by SafeGear advisors

Safes or security cabinets usually come with several locking options. Key and code locks offer the same security level - choose according to your preferences - and bear in mind there are also electronic, biometric and mechanical combination locks. Here are the differences and benefits of each safe lock type:

Key Safe Lock
Security safe keys are sturdy and around 10cm long (depending on the thickness of the door and security grade). Carrying one around can be inconvenient, and you will need somewhere safe to keep it. A key can also be broken or stolen.

Code Safe Lock
Allows use by several people without needing extra keys. If it is used by many people, some locks offer the option set personal user codes with an audit function.
The majority of our clients choose a code or electronic lock for their safe or security cabinet.

Mechanical Combination Safe Lock
No batteries or power supply are needed. Changing the code is more complex than with a digital code lock. We don't recommend and very rarely sell these locks as they can very difficult to use.
